Segunda Guerra Médica. Conquista por represalia. Jerjes I prepara la invasión de Grecia después de la derrota de la batalla de Maratón. Dejando atrás Sardes, Jerjes I se enfrenta a una alianza de 70 polis lideradas por Atenas y Esparta. Tras su victoria en el cabo de Artemiso y las Termopilas, no hay nada que le impida llegar a Atenas. La ciudad había sido evacuada dejando tan sólo una pequeña guarnición. Su destrucción es inevitable.
